Mice are small, and small animals take a while to chew through layers of materials and drywall. You should not ignore a rodent issue that has become this detrimental. Mice need to be trapped and removed as soon as you are aware they are inside of the home. If you have noticed damage in the ceiling, do not waste your time repairing it. First, find the holes in the outside of the home that have let the mice in. These areas need to be repaired before the mice can be eliminated. Failure to do this step will result in more rodents invading your home during or after the trapping process. A hole in the ceiling can be used as a prime location to set a trap. You know the mouse is going to return to that area to chew. Place the baited snap trap at that spot and in any other areas where activity has been identified. When all the mice have been removed from the home the ceiling can be repaired and repainted.
