Minneapolis mouse tip of the week: Mothballs and mice - Mothballs and mice are a benign combination of two very irritating things. Mothballs have a repugnant odor that can give humans headaches and respiratory issues. Mice are destructive and messy, leaving trailed of feces throughout the inside of a home. When you put the two things together—nothing happens. Humans assume that mothballs will be effective repellents against all animals because they are effective at stopping moths and other insects from ruining cloth. While the odor from mothballs can be annoying to some people, evidence has shown that mice are unaffected by the fumes. Just because an animal has a more sensitive ability to smell than person does not mean that smells will adversely affect that animal. Mothballs can be placed in a home at levels that would be toxic enough to harm a rodent. The problem is that this level of toxicity cannot be reached without removing the humans from the home, too. It is not a situation that can be won through the use of odorous products. Furthermore, mice are small enough, and a home large enough, that the animals can travel far enough away from offensive things without ever leaving the building.
