Birmingham mouse tip of the week: Mouse deterrent cat smell - People have often pondered the use of cat smell as a mouse deterrent. It stands to reason that, as a natural predator of mice, cats would be able to keep a home free of the little rodents. On that same wave of thinking, if mice are afraid of cats, the little buggers should also be afraid of cat smell. Yes, science and the laws of nature do make some kind of sense in this particular matter. Mice are afraid of cats, and will therefore be wary of entering an area that smells like a cat. But that’s wherein the catch lies: Mice will be wary, not scared off. When animals are enemies in nature, a certain avoidance level is obvious. The mouse does not want to be eaten, so it avoids the cat. Mice and other prey animals are not unintelligent, however, and will cease opportunities to make use of time and space when predators are not around. In simple terms: Cat smell, alone, will not keep mice away from your home. Even when a mouse sees a live cat nearby, if the mouse does not think the cat will attack it, the little rodent may scurry by within reach. This is a big downfall of all odor deterrents. Eventually, especially with no live predator to back up the smell, the mice will learn that the area is still safe. In a sense, they will become immune to the cat smell in that area.
